Nile

The source of the Nile is sometimes considered to be Lake Victoria, but the lake has feeder rivers of considerable size. The Kagera River, which flows into Lake Victoria near the Tanzanian town of Bukoba, is the longest feeder, although sources do not agree on which is the longest tributary of the Kagera and hence the most distant source of the Nile itself. It is either the Ruvyironza, which emerges in Bururi Province, Burundi, or the Nyabarongo, which flows from Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda. The two feeder rivers meet near Rusumo Falls on the Rwanda-Tanzania border. The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Ripon Falls near Jinja, Uganda, as the Victoria Nile. It flows for approximately 500 kilometres (300 mi) farther, through Lake Kyoga, until it reaches Lake Albert. After leaving Lake Albert, the river is known as the Albert Nile. It then flows into Sudan, where it is known as the Bahr al Jabal (“River of the Mountain”). The Bahr al Ghazal, itself 716 kilometres (445 mi) long, joins the Bahr al Jabal at a small lagoon called Lake No, after which the Nile becomes known as the Bahr al Abyad, or the White Nile, from the whitish clay suspended in its waters. When the Nile flooded it left a rich silty deposit which fertilized the soil. The Nile no longer floods annually since the completion of the Aswan Dam in 1970. From Lake No, the river flows to Khartoum. An anabranch river, the Bahr el Zeraf, flows out of the Nile’s Bahr al Jabal section and rejoins the White Nile.

Shimla

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and a major travel hill station in India. Shimla is also an important  administrative centre. Shimla (formerly spelt Simla) is set amidst spectacular hills and seeped in an aura of crumbling colonial charm. More than a government seat, it worked as the perfect setting for romance in the days of the British. The scenic landscape, the fabulous weather and the more relaxed social norms spelt love with a capital. Far away from the censorious eyes of Delhi and Calcutta, hot-blooded men and women indulged in drinking, gambling, and all sorts of licentious behaviour. Shimla was indeed the hotbed of passion and gossip, the lovely Mall being the centre of all action.

Venice

Venice (Venezia) really needs no introduction. When to go to Venice?Venice’s quietest season is winter. You’re unlikely to find Venice empty of tourists at any time, but late autumn and the first part of the winter are the best times to come if you want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of cheaper hotel rates. This is the best time to see a (relatively) touristfree Venice - but be prepared for icy temperatures and mists. In January and February the two-week-long Carnival is one of Venice’s big attractions and the crowds flock in - it is even more important at this time to book a hotel well in advance. There are masks and parties; it’s a bit tamer now, though, than the decadent excesses of the past. As the spring turns into summer, tourist numbers rise; and Venice in the height of summer is avoided by many; August can be swelteringly hot. The Venice Film Festival takes place in late August and early September.

ice Skating Starts in Shimla

With the onset of winter, ice skating enthusiasts in Shimla are rubbing their hands in glee. They can start skating sessions in Shimla’s natural ice skating rink, the onely one of its kind in Asia. The Ice Skating Club was founded in 1920. This year it is planning to conduct more sessions by starting earlier than in previous years. Dropping Temperatures : The dropping temperatures have led to the formation of a thin ice sheet in the rink, which has a natural clay surface. The club officials sprinkle water on this surface which freezes naturally. The sky needs to be clear for the temperature to plummet down to the desired levels. High humidity is required for the water to start freezing quickly.Origin of the Rink : The natural ice rink was set up by an Irish military official called Blessington. He discovered a frozen bucket of water outside his house, which gave him the idea of creating a skating rink. So, he created a small rink of his own. Blessington also taught his Indian servants how to sprinkle water on the rink’s natural clay surface, so that it freezes in cold weather.Skating Charges and Timings :The club record for hosting sessions is 165 in 1960-61. Last year, there were77 sessions. Ice skating enthusiasts are warming up to the prospects of skating again in this famous rink. The clubcharges a nominal fee of Rs 600 for a child and Rs 1,200 for an adult for the whole season. Tourists can also skateby paying Rs 100 for a single session. Skates are provided by the club. There are two daily sessions. The morning one is from 8 to 11 a.m. The evening hours are 5.30 to 8 p.m. But, these sessions depend on the formation of ice. Amritsar

Amritsar, literally Pool of Nectar, derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, the holy tank that surrounds the fabulous Golden Temple. First time visitors to Amritsar could be forgiven for the impression that Amritsar is like any other small town in northern India. In one sense, it is - with bustling markets, haphazard traffic, unyielding cattle, crowds and congestion typical of small town India. But Amritsar stands head and shoulders above any other city, its status elevated and sanctified by the presence of the venerable Golden Temple. Located in the heart of Amritsar, the temple complex is surrounded by a maze of narrow lanes, or katras, that house one of the busiest markets in India. But the Golden Temple is a serene presence, radiating a calm that makes people bow their heads in reverence. The gurudwara, as Sikh temples are called, is the holiest of Sikh shrines. It is not just Sikhs who travel to the Golden Temple to pay homage, the sacred shrine is equally revered by Hindus and people of other faiths who, too, make the pilgrimage to offers prayers at Harmandir Sahib. There’s more to Amritsar than that - amongst other sights is Jallianwala Bagh, site of the gruesome massacre of unarmed Indians by British troops. A major tourist attraction these days is the Indo-Pakistan border crossing at Wagah, just a short distance from Amritsar, with its elaborate change-ofguards drill with a lot of strutting and intimidatory showing off by both sides. The Golden Temple or Darbar Sahib, situated in Amritsar.
